Aspects of the coast and the depths of the sea from the Columena tower to S. Caterina.
The area of coast between S. Caterina to the Columena tower became known as “the sea of the Corsari”. The Saraceni privateers carried out numerous incursions along this coastline rich of cale and calette. The area allowed for easy landing. From the coast the saraceni, also known as the “Moors”, entered into the town and plundered the city’s farms and houses.
This prompted the local people to fortify their farms (The Masseria Zanzara is a classic example) This pushed Federico II first and then Carlo V after, to build towers along the coast to warn the town. The sea of the Corsari is rich not only in prehistory but also rich in uncontaminated nature.
